Random events February 2011

While in Port A we had several random things happen and several unplanned activities.
There was a meeting of a new group of The American Sewing Guild and I was able to attend. It was a great group of ladies and we talked about where each was from and what kind of sewing we did, as well as other crafts.
That same day we attended a social meeting of winter Texans from Michigan. It was interesting to learn how they came to Port A. Unfortunately we left early to attend a tour of the Texas A&M marine labs for shrimp research. Could have been interesting, but the guide was less than enthusiastic!
We have attended brown bag lunches on celestial navigation, sustainable landscaping and native plants and sustainable living. At the UTMSI we have seen films on may subjects, heard lectures on the sun and carbon relation, a panel discussion about the Gulf Oil Spill.

Visited the Corpus Christie Botanical Gardens and had an encounter with is garter snake
tiny green frog

and this strangely familiar butterfly!

Probably the best serendipity was being here for the 15th annual Whooping Crane Festival. It was really more of a conference than a festival. That turned out to be most interesting. I had no idea of their status or the rarity of the species. Speakers from all over talked about all the parts needed to protect them. Seems to me water and how we use it is the crux. Reinforcing the need conserve water and to maintain our wetlands.
